During the lengthy, complex, exciting and intense process of
creating the best fly lines, it's normally the RIO Labcoats who start
throwing numbers out there (things like coefficients of friction,
specific gravities, and tensile strength) the rest of us usually just
nod and try to elbow our way tot the front of the line for product and
testing duty. But (a full two years ago) this year's product line
started to evolve a little differently... it all began with 97%. Yep,
that important fact you leaned in Geology 101 (maybe the only thing)
-the fact that 97% of the earth's water is saltwater. "Hmmm..." we thought, "that's a whole lot of water that won't necessarily work for a size 20 baetis on a five-weight..." "...on the other hand, that's a whole lot of water that's begging to be fished." So,
with that 97% firmly in mind, we took to the challenge of improving our
saltwater fly lines. Over the course of two years, and the relentless
testing of tapers, cores, coatings, and colors, in every conceivable
condition, we're very, very happy to say that the results are nothing
less than amazing. We've perfected our tapers, our coatings, our
cores, and have expanded the application of our revolutionary XS
Technology to include all of our premier saltwater lines (other than
full sinking lines). We've successfully overhauled our saltwater lines
to be the finest available anywhere. And don't worry, we haven't
neglected the incredibly important 3% Challenge... we're constantly
re-examining, refining, and fine-tuning the fly lines for our
