Dry fly fishing has really started to turn the corner. The Bitteroot is still pretty low and clear, but the trout are turning on to the idea of eating the dry. The freezing night time temps are not helping the bugs out, but you can still see a skwala or two a day. The early spring capnias and nemouras are out as well. Small dark stimulators, mico-chubbies, mico-waterwalkers, and summer stones in sizes 16 and 18 will do the trick. A fair amount of midges are on the water in the afternoon and in select water you can find fish keying on them. The Skwala nymphs are getting chowed though. Along with, red San Juans, pink San Juans, little olive Sloans, perdigons, olive/brown rubber legs, and jig stones. Nymphing is still the best bet for catching the most fish, but fishing a skwala with a long dropper will get it done as well. You will catch most of your fish on the nymph, but don't be surprised when a couple fish come up for the dry.
